For most schools, the most cost-effective outdoor play equipment is a single multi-play playground climbing frame as the focal point of the playground, supplemented by separate agility, swing and free-play items. For EYFS and nursery use, our Toddler Playground Climbing Frame range offers age-appropriate equivalents. All our outdoor play equipment is UK-made and certified to BS EN1176.
Powder coating is more durable than wet paint for outdoor playground equipment. Powder is applied dry and cured under heat, forming a thicker, harder and more impact-resistant surface that resists chips, scratches and weathering. Compared to timber, powder-coated steel does not rot, warp, splinter or need ongoing re-staining, giving a longer service life and a lower whole-life cost.
A climbing frame can sit close to grass, but the area directly under and around the equipment (the impact area) must be surfaced with a critical-fall-rated impact surface such as wetpour or rubber tiles, retained by concrete pin kerbs. Grass alone is not classified as an impact-absorbing surface under BS EN1177.
The TM304R itself measures 3.47m x 4.40m x 2.61m. You should allow a minimum installation footprint of 6.47m x 7.40m to accommodate the surrounding safety zone, plus access room for children to queue and enter the frame safely.
With a free height of fall of 0.9m, the TM304R needs a critical-fall-rated impact surface across its full impact area. That works out at 49 one-metre-square rubber tiles or 43.5m² of wetpour, retained with 28.5 linear metres of concrete pin kerbs.
